Metabolism

Metabolism is the name given to the set of chemical transformations that enable living organisms to break down organic matter and thereby grow and produce energy. Animals and human beings metabolise food when they eat and digest it, in order to maintain the cells that make up their bodies and to produce the energy that enables them to continue functioning.

Fermentation is a form of metabolism used by yeast and some types of bacteria.
